Q |
Does my attic have capacity for storage? |
A |
Any person utilizing an attic for storage should exercise
good judgment not to overload the roof framing. Current building codes
dictate that residential attic trusses be designed for an occupant load
at any point within the truss span. While residential attic trusses are
not specifically designed for storage loading, if access has been provided
by the builder to the attic, the trusses are designed with the expectation
of some additional load. Minus the weight of materials,
this
typically equates to a maximum available load of 50 pounds per 2'x4' area
or just over 6 pounds per square foot. This loading should never be exceeded
since an excess load could collapse the roof and/or ceiling framing. We
recommend that you contact a licensed building professional if you have
an older home and/or there is any question regarding the capacity of your
roof system. |
